Peter Bowles in

The Browning Version
Terence Rattigan

The Browning Version
It is classics master Andrew Crocker-Harris’s last day at an English public school. His health is failing, his pupils dislike him and his marriage to the venomous Millie is disintegrating. Not only does she
openly resent her husband’s lack of success as a schoolmaster but she is carrying on an affair under his nose with the popular young chemistry master, Frank Hunter. A succession of visitors, revelations and betrayals force the former scholar to re-examine the debris of his life. Then his heart is overwhelmingly touched when a young student offers an unexpected gesture of kindness.
The Browning Version plays in double-bill with another classic one act play, Chekhov’s Swan Song. An elderly Russian actor wakes up in his dressing room in an almost empty theatre after his final
performance. As he laments the profession which turned him from a serious actor into a clown he shares some of his greatest moments with the stage prompt.
Peter Bowles is one of Britain's most distinguished actors whose starring roles on television include To The Manor Born and The Bounder. Directed by Peter Hall.

open quote marks To see Peter Bowles in the two parts side by side was a real lesson. The quality of his acting in two so different roles must be seen to be believed. I am always astonished that Malvern Theatre is rarely sold out and that such brilliant performances are missed by so many local people. Thank you for bringing this excellent double to Malvern. open quote marks
