Malvern Theatre Players Present

Our Country's Good
by Timberlake Wertenbaker

Our Country's Good
Botany Bay 1788.A young lieutenant is directing rehearsals for the first play ever to be staged in Australia – with only two copies of the text, a cast of convicts and one leading
lady who may be about to be hanged. Wertenbaker’s play follows the progress of this project. In a series of scenes of contrasting moods, ranging from tragedy to farce, she explores an extraordinary range of themes – patriotism, punishment, love, lust, rivalry, ambition, ideals, dreams – but above all, and including all of these, she shows us the strange power of the Theatre to reflect and direct the aspirations of men and women.
