English Touring Opera
Following their triumphant baroque festival in Autumn 2006 and an acclaimed spring tour, English Touring Opera returns
to Malvern with two eighteenth-century jewels, alongside an exhilarating new jazz opera, written to mark the 200th
anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.

BRIDGETOWER
A new jazz opera by Julian Joseph and Mike Phillips
ETO’s new opera commemorates the 200th anniversary of the act abolishing the slave trade in Britain. Composed by celebrated jazz musician Julian Joseph and written by author Mike Phillips, Bridgetower stars Cleveland Watkiss as the remarkable eighteenth century black musician. Born into slavery, Bridgetower became the prodigy of the Prince Regent, friend of Beethoven, violin virtuoso, and composer. Featuring jazz and classically trained singers including Jonathan Peter Kenny (ETO’s Tolomeo, Midsummer Night’s Dream), and the Julian Joseph Big Band.

L'INFEDELTA DELUSA or "Country Matters" by Joseph Haydn
Country Matters is a witty English language version of Haydn’s finest opera, L’infedelta delusa, written in 1773 for the court theatre of Esterhazy. A pacy Regency romp packed with charm and humour, it features some of Haydn’s most colourful music. Think Cold Comfort Farm meets Persuasion, set to a lively, lovely allegro – and there you have Country Matters. Sung in English.

TESEO by George Frederick Handel
The centre of this extraordinary opera is the formidable enchantress Medea. Teseo is a gripping drama of sorcery and desperate love, with dazzling arias and colourful scoring for strings, oboes, recorders, bassoons and horns. James Conway (Ariodante, Alcina, Tolomeo) directs a cast including famed Handel interpreter and recording star Derek Lee Ragin, and leading British sopranos Jeni Bern and Gail Pearson. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
