Theatre Royal Bath Productions presents

How the Other Half Loves
by Alan Ayckbourn

starring Nicholas Le Prevost and Marsha Fitzalan

How the Other Half Loves
How The Other Half Loves ingeniously juggles time and space as it presents the intricate lives and liaisons, passions and growing panic of three married couples. There’s the well-meaning but hapless boss; his wife who is involved in a dalliance with one of his employees; the philanderer himself, his hopelessly inept wife and two unsuspecting human alibis... Place the characters on a single set portraying two dinner parties on two consecutive evenings happening simultaneously and prepare for one of Ayckbourn’s most brilliantly-crafted comedies.

Inventive and hilarious, How the Other Half Loves cemented Ayckbourn’s reputation as a master of the situation comedy genre.

A former director of the Theatre of Comedy, Alan Strachan has worked extensively as a director of more than 30 West End productions ranging from new plays to revivals and musical revue, in work by writers as varied as Ayckbourn, Coward, Tennessee Williams and Shakespeare. Recently he has directed Glorious! starring Maureen Lipman, Entertaining Angels starring Penelope Keith and The Letter starring Jenny Seagrove and Anthony Andrews.

Nicholas Le Prevost has appeared many times in Bath, most notably in Peter Hall’s hilarious productions of Feydeau farces including An Absolute Turkey for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award. Another recent Olivier Award nomination was for his role as Colonel Pickering in the National Theatre and West End production of My Fair Lady. Marsha Fitzalan is best known for playing Sarah B’Stard opposite Rik Mayall in The New Statesman.

open quote marks Theatre Royal Bath production. Alan Ayckbourn's 'How the other half loves' is a bit of fun, but a brillantly structured and surprisingly touching one. This 1969 domestic comedy juxtaposes and increasingly interlocks three tetchy and adulterous married couples - a wealthy boss, two of his employees ans their wives. Two homes share the same stage space, with initially separate lives being played out at the same time. It's a witty juggling act and Ayckbourne then moves on - via phone calls, false alibis and confusions - to depict two dinner parties descending into chaos, simultaneously, at the one table. Alan Strachan's revival is delightful and deft, with precision timing and fine acting across the board. Amanda Royle is hilariously and painfully shy as Mary, the tongue-tied spouse of the creepy office nerd, and Nicholas Le Prevost is wonderfully funny as the boss, sustaining the manner of a squadron commander while being hopelessly scatty. Recommended. close quote marks
