Inherit the Wind
Evolution or Creation?
Scientific advancement or bigoted fundamentalism?
Inherit the Wind is the powerful drama of one of the most celebrated and defining courtroom battles of the 20th century.
Based on the infamous "monkey trial" of 1925 when a young teacher was pilloried for exposing children to the "subversive and improper2 theories of Charles Darwin. We see families, lovers, old friends and an entire community divided by conflicting beliefs in the full glare of the media spotlight and the sweltering heat of the distant summer.
But as we celebrate Darwin's bicentenary, those same timeless battles continue to be fought all over the world. Freedom of thought versus cencorship; civil liberties versus religious fundamentalism.
Always regarded as one of the most moving and meaningful plays in American theatre, this is living drama not a period piece.
