The Neil Sedaka Story

Laughter in the Rain
Bill Kenwright

Laughter in the Rain
With a career spanning six decades
and including nine smash hit singles
(three which became Number One),
Neil Sedaka has been inducted into
the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, had a
street named after him in his
hometown of Brooklyn, and was given
a star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame. From the innocent 50s to the
cynical 70s and beyond, he has
written and performed some of the
world’s best loved pop songs including
‘Oh, Carol’, ‘Breaking Up Is Hard To
Do’, ‘Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen’,
‘Solitaire, ‘Calendar Girl’ ‘Amarillo’,
‘Laughter in the Rain’ and many more.
Sedaka started songwriting at
Broadway's legendary Brill Building,
penning his first hit for his girlfriend
Carole King. He soon became a
teenage idol to rival Elvis but in 1964
his career collapsed as America
embraced the Beatles and other bands
of the 'British Invasion'. He found
salvation by moving to Britain, where
he signed to Elton John's Rocket
Records label, and remarkably
returned to the top of the US charts in
1974 with 'Laughter In The Rain' -
remaining a national treasure ever
since.
Laughter in The Rain is a remarkable
story of triumph against the odds.

open quote marks A cracking night out awaits audiences at Malvern Festival Theatre this week. Laughter In The Rain is the rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches-again story of legendary singer songwriter, Neil Sedaka. Featuring nearly forty of his hits a brilliantly written, biographical script charts the life and times of Sedaka from his humble beginnings growing up in a crowded New York apartment to becoming a celebrated, international recording artist. A talented, six-piece band deftly support a cast of thirteen, who catalogue Sedaka’s journey with slick multi-casting and stunning vocals. Neil Sedaka is superbly played by Wayne Smith, a true star in his own right. From the moment he comes on stage, Smith engages the audience with his infectious smile and endearing manner. Talent oozes from every pore of this gifted performer. In fact, the entire cast are superb in all of the many roles afforded to them. Edward Handoll is great as the adorably vulnerable Howie, Neil’s writing partner and Anna Clayton is delightful as Neil’s smart, supportive and ever optimistic wife, Leba. Andy Walmsley’s simple, cycloramic set provides the perfect frame for photographic projections of people, places and other images from Sedaka’s life and Nikki Bird’s costumes are a perfect representation of the different iconic eras. Laughter In The Rain is brilliant and justly deserved the standing ovation it received. Go and treat yourself to this feel-good show. It runs until Saturday. It’s a real triumph! close quote marks

open quote marks We watched the performance at Malvern on last evening and it was a very enjoyable show with plenty of excellent music to clap along with. Advance bookings do not seem to be very good, probably because Neil Sedaka is not always held in the same league as Elvis etc. Don't be put off as his life story is very interesting and England played its part in that story. One bonus - the cast last n...... more open quote marks

open quote marks Bank Holiday Monday, nothing planned, received an e-mail advising tickets available for Laughter In The Rain - lets go, with mixed feelings. What a brilliant decision. From the moment the show started it was non-stop excellence in the cast, acting, dancing and total feel good factor. I was completely engrossed in the enthusiasm the cast portrayed and found it almost impossible not to ...... more open quote marks
