LIVE from the MET
Der Rosenkavalier Live Broadcast
Starring Renee Fleming and Susan Graham
Richard Strauss's Comic Opera
Richard Strauss’s most famous and best-loved opera, Der Rosenkavalier, can be seen on the big screen in the Forum Theatre, Malvern early in the new year in a live broadcast direct from New York’s Metropolitan Opera.
A comic tale of love and intrigue, set amongst the Viennese aristocracy in the early years of the twentieth century, the opera is characterised by its beautiful melodies and stunning use of the Viennese waltz. The vocal writing is amongst Strauss’s finest and is particularly remarkable at points such as the famous Act III trio, when three female voices are heard in ensemble. Other highlights include the opening “bedroom” scene between the Marschallin and Octavian and the beautiful moment in Act II when Octavian presents Sophie with the Silver Rose on behalf of Baron Ochs, only to find that he has fallen in love with her himself.
The opera stars two of the world’s greatest singers Renee Fleming, previously seen in the live broadcast of La Traviata from the Royal Opera House last June, as The Marschallin and Susan Graham as Octavian. They are joined by Christine Schafer as Sophie, Thomas Allen as Faninal and Kristin Sigmundsson as Baron Ochs. The opera is conducted by Edo de Waart and is seen in Nathaniel Merrill’s lavishly staged and costumed production.
