Alston
Richard Alston is quite simply one of the most musical choreographers in the world – every dance he makes lives and breathes the music he chooses. This season, his
company’s programme features music by French Baroque composer Denis Gaultier, minimalist icon Steve Reich and
Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Alston’s contemporary
classic ROUGHCUT is danced to the cascading peals of Steve
Reich’s shimmering New York and Electric Counterpoints for clarinet and guitar. OUT OF THE STRONG is driven by
the dramatic contrasts of Prokofiev’s sixth Piano Sonata, in which terse anger melts into sweet lyricism. Both music and dance deal with the complexity of Prokofiev’s character, which was warm and irascible by turn. LIGHT FLOODING INTO DARKENED ROOMS has a sense of intimate small space, marked out by light spilling through windows. Very much inspired by the paintings of Vermeer, the dance is
accompanied by the quiet sensuality of baroque lute music.
