Conor’s mother is sick, he’s being bullied at school and he is angry at the world. A giant tree monster is going to help him gain revenge.
Conor (Lewis MacDougall) has nightmares. He wakes in the dead of night, disturbed by the things that torment his sleep.

But how do you overcome your night terrors when being awake is even worse?

Being bullied at school and living with his hateful grandmother is bad enough, but Conor is constantly haunted by the absence of his mother, who is in the hospital – with very slim hope of ever coming home again.

Sad, angry and alone, Conor dreams of escaping from the desolation he must endure every day.

And that’s when he meets the monster.

Shortly after midnight, Conor wakes to hear a voice, calling to him from outside his window. What he discovers is beyond his wildest imagination – a yew tree has transformed into a giant creature, who knows everything about Conor’s life.

The monster offers to help Conor take revenge on the many forces who have destroyed his happiness. However, while it might make him feel better initially, destruction only causes more pain in the long run, and Conor discovers the only way to move forward is to fight the monster inside himself…

Based on the Carnegie award-winning children’s book by Patrick Ness, A Monster Calls is directed by J. A. Bayona (The Impossible) and stars MacDougall (Pan) as Conor, Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) as his sick mother and Liam Neeson (Schindler’s List) as the voice of the monster.
