Detroit (15)

1st October 2017 7:45 pm

Racial tension reaches boiling point on the streets of Detroit in the aftermath of the 1967 Algiers Motel murders, in director Kathryn Bigelow’s tense crime drama.

Detroit, 1967, and the shocking murder of three African-American men at the Algiers Motel takes place. Security guard Melvin Dismukes (John Boyega) is on-duty at the time of the shooting, and questioned by police who falsely label him as a prime suspect.

The events which unfold in the aftermath lead to a police raid on an unlicensed bar, followed by five days of rioting, leaving over 2,000 buildings destroyed and 43 dead. Fifty years after the Detroit riots, the incident is still considered one of the most violent revolts in American history, and exposed a corrupt police force willing to frame an innocent man to cover up their racially-driven wrongdoings.

Academy Award Winner Kathryn Bigelow adds Detroit to her impressive cinematic resume, which includes The Hurt Locker (2008), Zero Dark Thirty (2012) and Point Break (1991). Rising star John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) stars, with stellar support from Will Poulter (The Revenant).

The film comes surrounded by Oscar buzz, and the release will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the riots.
