A young farmer’s repetitive existence of casual sex, binge drinking and long working hours in rural Yorkshire takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of a handsome Romanian migrant worker.
For 24-year-old Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor), life as a farmer’s son in the rolling hills of the Yorkshire countryside couldn’t be any bleaker. Actively gay, yet not openly so to his parents, he fills his time binge drinking and seeking casual sex, which leaves him feeling empty and longing to move elsewhere.
But, then along comes a Romanian migrant worker named Gheorghe to assist with lambing season (Alec Secareanu) and everything changes. A man of few words, it doesn’t take long for Johnny to begin teasing Gheorghe about his origins, however their relationship switches drastically, and lust quickly turns to love.
Can Johnny truly ever let himself go and just be himself, or have years of sexual repression damaged his psyche beyond repair?
Written and directed by Francis Lee, who makes his directorial debut, God’s Own Country has swept the film festival critics and audiences off their feet, taking the Directing Award in the World Cinema Dramatic category.
Praised for its stellar lead performances by Josh O’Connor (Peaky Blinders, Cinderella) and Alec Secareanu (Matasari), as well as its fresh approach to an often cliché-riddled genre, the film has received 4-star reviews from The Guardian, Empire and the Metro amongst others.
‘’One of the most assured British debuts of recent years’’ – Sight & Sound
‘’A beautiful romantic story full of hope’’– HeyUGuys
‘’Spellbinding’’ – Attitude
‘’Sensual, surprising and incredibly affecting’’ – Little White Lies
