Viceroy’s House (12A)

10th March 2017 - 16th March 2017

It’s the final days of Britain’s colonial involvement in India and Lord Mountbatten is about to step down as Viceroy.

But is the country ready to govern itself?

It’s 1947 and colonial Britain is coming to an end – particularly in India – where the last Viceroy is about to step down…

Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) and his wife Edwina (Gillian Anderson) are to hand the ruling of India back to its people, but is the country ready to rule itself once again?

Traditionally living upstairs at the home of the former English rulers of India, some 500 servants worked downstairs. Inviting people of Eastern heritage around the dinner table, Edwina is determined to change the very culture of how the English and Indians bond with one another.

However, such a smooth transition doesn’t echo throughout the nation, with people of all different religions and backgrounds beginning to clash.

Will the good intentions of the Mountbattens shine through the emerging chaos and provide India with a foundation to govern itself? Or will the country tear herself apart?

Starring the familiar faces of Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson (The X Files: I Want to Believe) as Lord and Edwina Mountbatten, Viceroy’s House also features Michael Gambon (The Harry Potter series) as General Hastings Ismay.
