A German Christmas

19th December 2020

A German Christmas
Praetorius Christmas Mass
Corelli Christmas Concerto Op.6 No.8

Armonico Consort
Directed by Christopher Monks
The English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble

Armonico Consort present Michael Praetorius’s magnificent Mass for Christmas Morning. Taking inspiration from the Venetian school, Praetorius surrounds the listener with a number of choral and instrumental groups, using virtuosic combinations of colour, vitality and excitement, ending with an awe inspiring, 22-part In Dulci Jubilo. The concert opens with Corelli’s Concerto Grosso for two solo violins, Op. 6 No. 2. Perhaps the most mesmerising of Corelli’s Concerti Grossi, it is known as the Christmas Concerto, thanks to an engraving on its first printed edition, which reads ‘Fatto per la notte di Natale’ (‘made for the night of Christmas’).

Running time: 60 minutes (no interval)
