Four painfully average university students decide to change their lives by turning into sophisticated criminals in an attempt to steal valuable books from a local university. Barry Keoghan, Evan Peters, and Ann Dowd star in this thrilling drama, based on the unbelievable but true events of the 2004 Transy Book Heist.

Spencer Reinhard (Barry Keoghan) is paralysed with boredom. Everything he does, from his studies to his job, just seems like a long and endless road to nothing.

His friend Warren (Evan Peters) feels much the same. And so, when the opportunity to break free from the monotony arises, the boys decide to take things from one extreme to the other. Instead of watching life pass them by, they decide to attempt to pull off the art crime of the century.

It all begins with a tour of the Transylvania University Library. What Spencer thinks will be just another uneventful day becomes a major turning point in his life. Within the Special Collection section is several million dollars’ worth of rare books, protected only by one middle-aged librarian (Ann Dowd).

What better way to spice up your life than to steal a few of the world’s most prized treasures?

After recruiting fellow equally bored students Eric (Jared Abrahamson) and Chas (Blake Jenner), the group begin to piece together a fool-proof plan that will turn them into millionaires.
But what happens when a group of amateurs blunder headfirst onto the wrong side of the law?

Based on the bizarre, real-life events of the 2004 Transy Book Heist, American Animals is directed by Bart Layton (The Imposter) and features Barry Keoghan (The Killing of a Sacred Deer), Evan Peters (X-Men: Days of Future Past), and Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale).
