When a pregnant African-American woman’s boyfriend is wrongly convicted of rape, it’s a race against the clock as she desperately tries to prove his innocence before she gives birth. An incredibly moving love story starring KiKi Layne, Stephan James, and Regina King, who picks up an Academy Award for her performance.
It’s New York City in the 1970s and nineteen-year-old Tish (KiKi Layne) has fallen madly in love with her lifelong childhood friend Fonny (Stephan James). The couple can’t wait to get married and spend their future together.
But their plans are suddenly derailed when Fonny is falsely accused of rape and imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit.
While Fonny awaits trial behind bars, Tish discovers she is pregnant. Her mother Sharon (Regina King) and father Joseph (Colman Domingo) are quick to support their daughter, and Tish and her family set out to try and clear Fonny’s name before the baby arrives.
But as a black man in America in the 1970s, the odds are stacked against Fonny, and his chances of making it through the unjust legal system are worryingly slim…
A moving love story that perfectly intertwines passion with sadness, If Beale Street Could Talk is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by James Baldwin and is the work of Academy award-winning filmmaker, Barry Jenkins (Moonlight).
The film features a remarkable cast including Academy Award winner Regina King (Ray), KiKi Layne (Chicago Med), Stephan James (Race) and Colman Domingo (Lincoln), and received much acclaim at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
