Disobedience (15)

2nd January 2019 - 3rd January 2019

When a New York photographer learns about the death of her estranged rabbi father, she must attend his funeral in the Orthodox Jewish community where she was frowned upon decades earlier for having an attraction to a female friend. A magnificent tale of forbidden love starring Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz, and Alessandro Nivola.

After learning that her estranged father has died, New York photographer Ronit Krushka (Rachel Weisz) returns to her hometown in North London to attend his funeral where she was ostracised decades earlier for having an attraction to a female friend.

Her family tell her they’ve forgiven her, but in an orthodox Jewish community secluded by religion, she still feels unwelcome and it seems that nothing has changed since she left. Feeling lost, she becomes confused about what happened to her father, and her sexuality.

Despite the awkwardness of others around her, she reunites with her two main childhood friends, Dovid (Alessandro Nivola) who was taken in by her rabbi father at 13, and Esti (Rachel McAdams), the subject of her adolescent affections.

She is surprised to discover they are now a married couple but becomes close with the pair – especially Esti. Before long, their passions reignite and they become secret lovers once again. Only this time around, the consequences are even more significant.

A powerful tale of forbidden love based on the novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman. Set to be one of the biggest films of the year, Disobedience is the work of Chilean director Sebastian Lelio, famed for film hits Gloria and A Fantastic Woman which picked up numerous awards.

The drama stars an incredibly talented line-up, including Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener) and Academy Award Nominee Rachel McAdams (The Notebook). Alessandro Nivola (Face/Off) also stars.
