Edie (12A)

28th June 2018 2:00 pm

BAFTA Nominee Sheila Hancock stars as Edie, an 83-year-old woman who sets out on a spontaneous expedition through the Scottish Highlands, which challenges not only her body, but her mind and spirit.

Everyone seems to think that Edie’s life might is in its final stages. Her husband, George (Donald Pelmear) has died and, despite her protests, her daughter Nancy (Wendy Morgan) wants to move her into a retirement home. But, at 83 years old, Edie has one dream that’s still very much alive.

Many years ago, her father planned to take her on an epic hiking trip through the Scottish Highlands. However, George, a harsh and controlling man, prevented her from going. The missed opportunity has always haunted Edie, and she decides that it’s one regret she won’t allow to follow her to the grave.

She leaves a message for her daughter and sets out on her own, determined to conquer the remote and challenging summit of Mount Suilven. With the help of Jonny (Kevin Guthrie), a local guide, Edie crosses moorland and trudges through bogs, towards the steep ascent to the peak.

Surrounded by the raw and stunning beauty of the Highlands, Edie’s stern, bitter demeanour begins to fall away. Exposed to a completely foreign territory, she experiences the wonders of mountain rain and cheap cider, finding a joy and strength she didn’t know she had.

But, beyond the physical challenge, Edie is also forced to face the dark chapters in her past as she looks towards the climb that still lies ahead.

Directed by Simon Hunter (Mutant Chronicles, Lighthouse), Edie was nominated for the Audience Award at the 2017 Edinburgh International Film Festival. BAFTA Nominee Sheila Hancock (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Bedtime) stars as Edie, alongside Kevin Guthrie (Dunkirk, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).
