The latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s much-loved novel of miscalculation has a vibrant pastel colour palette and a lightness of touch to match.
Emma Woodhouse is famously stubborn in her appraisal of people and their suitability for each other, and notoriously blind about their feelings and her own desires. This perennial romantic favourite boasts a great cast who make the most of an effervescent and witty script by Eleanor Catton, winner of the 2013 Man Booker Prize for her novel The Luminaries. Coincidentally, Clueless, the modern-day take on Emma from the 1990s is also due a remake in the coming year.
Director: Autumn de Wilde
Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Nighy, Josh O’Connor, Johnny Flynn, Miranda Hart
UK, 2020, 2 hours 5 minutes
