BORDERLINES FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW

Director: Eva Husson

Starring: Golshifteh Farahani, Emmanuelle Bercot, Zübeyde Bulut

France/Belgium/Georgia/Switzerland, 2018

In her second feature, French writer-director Eva Husson shifts the experience of war on the front line to a female perspective.

Committed war correspondent Mathilde travels into the Daesh battleground of Iraqi Kurdistan, where she is embedded with a unit of female peshmerga fighters. Led by ex-lawyer Bahar, the unit is made up of women whose children were abducted and husbands massacred by ISIS, who held them captive as sex slaves.

Weaving between their harrowing pasts and a perilous present, Husson highlights the shared suffering that strengthens their bond, and their will to fight to get their village and their families back. She consistently chooses to highlight the camaraderie shared by the female fighters over the violence they inflict; her characters are soldiers, but they are women, and people, first.
