Rocks (12A)

10th March 2020 4:30 pm

PREVIEW PRIOR TO GENERAL RELEASE

Sarah Gavron’s highly anticipated third feature follows Brick Lane and Suffragette with the story of Rocks, a teenage girl growing up in a multi-ethnic community.

Shola ‘Rocks’ has big dreams for the future, loyal friends and an adoring younger brother, Emmanuel. But when her unstable mother leaves home, her world turns upside down, with the days that follow becoming the most defining of her life. Based on a script by award-winning playwright Theresa Ikoko and Claire Wilson (Little Drummer Girl), Rocks was predominantly crewed by women. Gavron discovered the dynamic, largely female cast through casting sessions at schools and developed the film with them through extensive workshops. The result is a nuanced, joyous film, full of spirit, that affirms the power of female friendship.

Director: Sarah Gavron
Starring: Bukky Bakray, Kosar Ali, D’angelou Osei Kissiedu, Ruby Stokes
UK, 2019, 1 hour 33 minutes

“This film is such a rush of vitality. It rocks.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
