Event Navigation
Without doubt one of the most distinctive artists of his generation Stephen Hough returns to Malvern Theatres six years after his memorable 2014 recital here. The programme, which Hough says ‘explores pieces which have death as part of their identity or inspiration’ includes two of Liszt’s Mephisto Waltzes as well as Chopin’s famous ‘Funeral March’ sonata. Stephen will also give one of the first UK performances of his own fourth piano sonata. Subtitled ‘Vida Breve’, this work is the pianist-composer’s response to what he describes as ‘the melancholy of life’s brevity’.
Bach: Chaconne in D Minor from Solo Violin Partita No.2 (arr. Busoni)
Busoni: Berceuse (No.7 from Seven Elegies)
Chopin: Sonata No.2 in B Flat Minor ‘Funeral March’
Hough: Sonata No.4 ‘Vida Breve’
Liszt: Funerailles
Liszt: Mephisto Waltz No.4
