BORDERLINES FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW
Director: Christian Petzold
Starring: Franz Rogowski, Paula Beer, Godehard Giese
Germany/France, 2018
Christian Petzold (Barbara, Phoenix) deftly skips across time and blurs identities in this stunning adaptation of Anna Seghers’ 1944 novel Transit Visa.
Refugee Georg, escapes in the nick of time as German troops approach Paris. In his luggage, he carries the documents of an author, Weidel, who has taken his own life in fear of persecution. In Marseille, where the past and present co-exist, only those who can prove they can leave may remain, so the author’s papers, above all his Mexican visa, are invaluable. Georg assumes Weidel’s identity and plunges into a transitory existence in the consulates, cafés and bars that line the harbour. Everything changes when he falls in love with the mysterious Marie. Who is she and what are her motives?
