Malik, an illiterate eighteen year-old Franco-Arab is sent to Brécourt prison sentenced to six years for assaulting police officers. Alone and without money, he finds himself unprotected in an environment of corruption and violence from the opposing Corsican and Muslim gangs. César, the head of the Corsican inmates, forces Malik to kill one of the Muslims and in reward gives him support and protection. In working to save himself while in prison he learns how to deal drugs and so climbs up the hierarchy of César’s mafia.
