Based on Bastien Vivès’s graphic novel of the same name, this stylish coming-of-age follows the development of young ballerina Polina through time. Her working-class parents have placed the 8-year-old at a prestigious Russian dance academy as a means of betterment. There, she is indoctrinated by the tyrannical Bojinski in the rigorous classical training required for a place in the Bolshoi. The older Polina (played by real-life dancer Anastasia Shevtsova in some stunningly choreographed sequences) breaks away from her prescribed path, falls in love, and opts for an ever looser free-form style of dance.
