Armonico Consort & AC Academy Singers
In a legendary time of heroes and warriors, prince Beowulf battles demons and magical beasts. The oldest surviving poem in Old English, Beowulf is a fantasy saga which has inspired countless retellings of the myth, including Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Having formerly worked with the likes of Duran Duran and The Rolling Stones, Armonico Consort’s composer-in-residence Toby Young (former BBC Proms Young Composer of the Year) has set this touching epic drama to music. Written for soprano, choir, harp, keyboards and children’s choir, with strong folk-pop influences, and a gripping script from one of the authors of Have I Got News For You, Beowulf will entertain the whole family.

We went to see Beowulf tonight. What a great performance! Top class Musicians, superb choir and a 143 children from local schools: all harmonised. Timothy West was a superb narrator. The composer of this new work, Toby Young actually played the keyboard himself alongside the World Class Harpist, Ann Denholm and soprano, Elin Manahan Thomas.
Malvern theatres! Please, please, please put on more of this type of production, where local children are involved in the whole performance. Those children were so together: a credit to themselves and their teachers. We could all learn lessons in behaviour from them too!
Christopher Monk's personal involvement, quiet style and brilliant musicianship is always superb. With Armonico, he has added so much to the music of Malvern. We can't wait to see the Armonico magic back again twice more this year.
