Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson star in this beautifully judged study of a landslide in slow motion, as a couple once very much in love submit themselves to the divorce industry.
Charlie (Adam Driver) has become a star director in New York theatre, while his wife Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) has put her acting career on the back burner for motherhood. Their relationship suffers and when they engage lawyers (Laura Dern and Ray Liotta) keen to eviscerate the other side and claim sole custody, the stage is set for personal tragedy.
Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha, The Meyerowitz Stories) keeps a steady hand on our sympathy between the couple, and a clear eye for the most painful part of divorce: that love and hate sit side by side, as laughter turns to recrimination.
Driver and Johansson place themselves centre stage for awards consideration but Alan Alda, Liotta and Dern bring unique craft to this searing portrait that matches the likes of Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage and Kramer vs. Kramer.
