PREVIEW
Gustave Eiffel’s gargantuan struggles to construct the iconic iron tower are superimposed on a fictionalised love-affair.
A surly Romain Duris plays Eiffel, an engineer from a working-class background who, by the time the tower was commissioned for the 1889 World’s Fair, had already built bridges, railway structures and the steel skeleton for the Statue of Liberty. Reunited with former love, high-class Adrienne Bourgès, now married to an influential journalist, he announces his intention to make a monument twice as high as any other.
The sheer technical logistics of raising the 300-metre ‘A’-shaped tower are rendered by amazing digital effects while the controversy about ‘modernity’ that raged throughout the two years of its construction is truly fascinating.
