Great Freedom (18) Borderlines Film Festival
18th March 2022 - 20th March 2022
Hard-hitting and uncompromising, Great Freedom is also a tender queer love story and a brilliantly performed study of vulnerability.
It’s hard to take your eyes off Franz Rogowski (Victoria, Transit, Black Milk) through the course of this searing prison drama. In postwar Germany, Hans (Rogowski) is repeatedly locked up for defying Paragraph 175, a provision of the German Criminal Code which outlawed male homosexuality from 1871 to 1969, a shocking historical injustice that saw over 140,000 men imprisoned.
Finding temporary lovers during his spells in high-security prison, Hans develops a more meaningful friendship with his cellmate Viktor, and despite Viktor’s initial mistrust, over three separate time spans they develop an intense and loving bond.
