Memory Box (15) Borderlines Film Festival

11th March 2022

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00am, repeating until 14th March 2022

A refreshingly female perspective on conflict and memory from artist filmmakers Hadjithomas and Joreige.

Single mother Maia lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter, Alex. On Christmas Eve, they receive an unexpected delivery: notebooks, tapes, and photos Maia sent to her best friend from 1980’s Beirut. Maia refuses to open the box or confront its memories, but Alex secretly dives into it. Between fantasy and reality, Alex enters the world of her mother’s tumultuous, passionate adolescence during the Lebanese civil war, unlocking mysteries of a hidden, conflict-torn past, repurposing it for social media.

Drawing from the filmmakers’ own memory boxes, the narrative reflects on the effect of distance on relationships and how hope and regeneration can succeed tragedy.
