Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water) remakes the 1946 carnival-set thriller into a stylish, sleazy neo-noir.
Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) is a drifter with a dark past who settles into a carnival troupe when he discovers a talent for sleight of hand tricks. Not content to stop at that, he moves to the city to use his skills to catch bigger fish and fatter wallets.
The female supporting cast of Cate Blanchett as Lilith, an icy psychiatrist, Toni Colette as Zeena, Stan’s mentor and Rooney Mara as his savvy girlfriend Molly, is superb.
A passion project for del Toro, 30 years in the realisation, he has crafted a dark and twisted take on hubris and manipulation.
