While While 2019’s Pain & Glory saw Pedro Almodóvar spin his own past into gold, here he confronts the buried past of his native Spain.
Two women meet in the delivery room after making the same decision to go it alone as mothers. Janis (Almodóvar regular Penélope Cruz) is middle-aged and delighted to find herself with child; Ana is a regretful teenager. Building mutual support, they soon discover their lives are entwined in ways they did not imagine. Meanwhile, Janis’s role as a forensic archaeologist finds her excavating the graves of men killed during Franco’s ‘White Terror’.
Under Almodóvar’s steady command, his team spins themes of birth, death, motherhood and fate into a fluent, sumptuously realised story.
