A return to the portrait of the artist as a young woman: Joanna Hogg’s much anticipated sequel to her autobiographical drama The Souvenir picks up filmmaker Julie’s story.
If Part One was the story of Julie’s fractured relationship, Part Two follows her continued quest to realise her creativity while coming to terms with grief. Over five years, Julie untangles her love affair through her film-making – relying on the complicated support of her parents and the input of fellow filmmakers (including a caustic, scene-stealing Richard Ayoade), culminating with her graduation show.
A mix of memoir and fantasy, it’s full of ideas, prickly, melancholic, incisive and funny, set in a marvellously evocative 1980s Britain.
