When the Nazis occupy Paris, Jewish theatre owner Lucas Steiner goes into hiding in the cellar, giving control of the theatre to his gentile wife, Marion. She mounts a new play, hires a new actor Bernard Granger and casts him in the lead. The two soon develop feelings for one another.
