Handel’s Water Music & Biber’s Missa Salisburgensis
3rd February 2018 7:30 pm
Event Navigation
Armonico Consort has received considerable acclaim for its performances of Handel’s Fireworks Music. Now for 2018, Armonico adds Handel’s celebrated Water Music to its repertoire.
Alongside the Water Music on the programme is Biber’s spectacular Salzburg Mass in 53 parts. Written on enormous sheets of paper which make Tallis’s 40-parts Spem in alium seem rather small by comparison, Biber’s Salzburg Mass is the largest surviving composition of sacred baroque music. The manuscript was first found in the home of a greengrocer in the 1870s in Salzburg and was originally thought to have been composed by Benevoli. In the mid-1970s the musicologist Hintermaier proved that the Missa had been written by Heinrich Biber, most probably in 1682 for the celebrations marking the 1100thanniversary of the archdiocese of Salzburg.
Join the finest musicians and singers of Armonico Consort to experience this magnificent and opulent work. Unmissable.
