Diego Maradona (12A)

6th August 2019 - 8th August 2019

Joining Napoli for a world-record transfer fee in the mid-1980s, the great Diego Maradona was adored by the Neapolitan. But while he was a genius on the pitch, he lived a colourful life off it. Follow the illustrious career of one of the world’s greatest ever footballers, directed by Academy Award and BAFTA-winning Asif Kapadia.

By the early 1980s, Italian football giants Napoli had criminally underachieved, with fans aching for a major trophy to show for their unequalled passion. So, when the club signed Argentine footballing maestro Diego Maradona for a record transfer fee in 1984, the city of Naples lit up.

A match made in heaven, the fanatical Neapolitan immediately fell in love with the tricky attacker, as he quickly led Napoli to their first ever title.
But with success came a price. Given free rein in a city where the rules weren’t always seen as compulsory, the charismatic South American ran wild…

Follow the colourful career of the illustrious Maradona, as he took over Naples and became untouchable. From the brilliance to the controversy, the World Cup-winning genius lived a life few footballers ever could again.

Directed by Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna), Academy Award winner and four-time BAFTA victor, this documentary is a tale of unforgettable glory, despair, and betrayal, constructed from over 500 hours of never-before-seen footage from the Argentine’s personal archive.
