G&S The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company – The Mikado

7th September 2023

The Mikado

The Mikado is one of the best-loved and famous of all the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, and this brand-new production is directed by Sarah Helsby Hughes and stars Simon Butteriss.

Nanki-Poo, the son of the Emperor of Japan, has fled to the town of Titipu to escape a forced marriage with the ugly, elderly Katisha.  He falls in love with Yum-Yum, who is engaged to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner.  To complicate matters, Katisha arrives demanding her lover.

Enjoy a hilarious performance brimming with Gilbert’s ingenious wit and brought to you by a fabulous first-class cast.

The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company was created twenty six years ago and for over a decade has brought favourite G & S operas to Malvern in productions that have received outstanding reviews from the national press and regular four and five star ratings. All performances are accompanied by the acclaimed National Festival Orchestra.

Event Reviews

  • Adrienne

Whilst I loved the performance and cannot fault the singing, acting and enthusiasm of the Company I felt the change of Set reduced our enjoyment by half. It just didn't work, I did a random survey of several people in the auditorium at the interval and without exception they preferred the traditional performances , no one could quite understand why you have changed it to a boys boarding school, it detracted from the plot and I would certainly not want to see it again...it was practically a full house last night and I overheard several people praising the company but being disappointed in your choice to change the way it has always been staged. You did it incredibly well but it just wasn't the same, please think again and return to what we know and love
    ..many thanks Adrienne Chadwick
