Malvern Shakespeare Folio 400 Festival: Special 400th Anniversary Talk

8th November 2023 3:00 pm

Malvern Shakespeare
Folio 400 Festival:
Celebrating 400 years of Shakespeare’s First Folio

Special 400th Anniversary
First Folio Talk
by Professor Judith Buchanan

The Coach House Theatre is delighted to welcome Professor Buchanan to the Folio Festival. Professor Buchanan is not only the Master of St Peter’s College Oxford and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of
the University of Oxford, but she is a leading authority on the 1623 First Folio of Shakespeare’s plays, a work which is still one of the most important secular works ever to be published.

In this well-illustrated talk, Professor Buchanan will discuss what this hugely influential volume has offered to the world. The talk will include revealing points of comparison with previously published, single-work editions of Shakespeare’s plays and some histories of loss, sale, theft, and recovery that individual copies of the 1623 Folio have accrued in their passage down the centuries. In 2022 Professor Buchanan was invited by Sotheby’s New York to speak about a rare copy of the 1623 Shakespeare Folio that came up for sale.

Malvern Shakespeare Folio 400 Festival

Nay, Remember Me! performed by Malvern Theatre Players, runs from 7 to 11 Nov. The Malvern Shakespeare Folio 400 Festival as a whole runs from 5 to 12 Nov. Something will be happening every day at the Coach House Theatre, with a special event on the 8th, the anniversary of the publishing of Shakespeare’s First Folio in 1623!
