Malvern Theatres Young Company presents Blithe Spirit

8th August 2023 - 13th August 2023

Directed by Nic Lloyd

Written in seven days at the height of the Blitz, Blithe Spirit ran for nearly 2000 performances in the West End, breaking box office records as the longest running comedy in the history of British theatre.

Coward’s own favourite play, it tells of novelist and socialite Charles Condomine, recently re-married but haunted by the ghost of his late wife, Elvira. She is conjured up by the eccentric
medium Madame Arcati and embarks on a spirited campaign to sabotage his new life …

Established in 2012, Malvern Theatres Young Company lives aspiring young actors the opportunity to perform in a professional environment. Blithe Spirit follows their successful production of The Importance of Being Earnest last summer.

‘This young company demonstrates the strength of theatre by allowing the beauty of words to shine through … all of the young actors are given an opportunity to demonstrate their skill, which they do with an ability well beyond their years’ The Edinburgh Guide

This amateur production of Blithe Spirit is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.

Event Reviews

I consider myself lucky to have seen this production on Thursday afternoon.

The cast were excellent, we could hear every word and they held the stage amazingly.

What a treat I have had this afternoon!
My first visit to the recently opened Studio 1 at Malvern Theatres to see ‘Blithe Spirit’.
The new performance space was very impressive and the pieces of furniture for the set were well chosen to set the scene. The cast of young actors, without exception, were superb. How talented they are!
They all played their parts in a very mature and assured way.
Moa Myerson (Madam Arcati) had just the right degree of eccentricity, Rhys Harris-Clark (Charles) and Mia Stevens (Ruth) maintained their ‘upper class’ accents and developed their gradually heightened irritation with each other to ‘a tee’.
Dr. and Mrs Bradman, Toby Burchell and Rachel Maltby played their respective parts to great effect.
Tara Semple (Edith) played her part with good timing and received positive reactions from the audience to her character’s amusing and sometimes awkward moments.
Emma King (Elvira) was just right. Her flowing, ethereal costume suited the part so well and her performance was excellent in every respect.
Very many congratulations to everyone involved in this production!
