Mary Queen of Scots (15)

1st February 2019 - 7th February 2019

The story of Mary Stuart’s dramatic young life and her turbulent relationship with Elizabeth I, featuring an all-star cast including Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, David Tennant, and Guy Pearce.

Before she turned 20, Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) had married, become the Queen of France, been widowed, and returned to her native country to reclaim the throne of Scotland.

However, another powerful female leader currently rules over England and Scotland – Mary’s cousin, the mighty Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie).

Spending her life being treated like a prop in court, Mary doesn’t just want to be a pretty face on a fancy chair anymore. She asserts her claim to the English throne, throwing the idea of peace in Britannia into question she challenges Elizabeth I’s sovereignty.

Divided by borders, and yet closer to each other than they might be willing to accept, the two women engage in a power struggle – politically and personally – as they try to maintain their independence and assert themselves in a world that fights their every move.

Despite the issues that divide them, Mary and Elizabeth face the same struggles – both are plagued by hidden enemies who want to tear them down, and face pressure sacrifice their power to the men who wait, hungry, on the fringes.

Based on the biography John Guy, My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots, Josie Rourke (National Theatre Live: Saint Joan), who is acclaimed on the theatre scene, directs a talented cast, including Academy Award Nominees Saoirse Ronan (Ladybird) and Margot Robbie (I, Tonya), alongside David Tennant (Broadchurch), and Guy Pearce (Alien: Covenant).
