Mother and Son (15) Borderlines Film Festival – PREVIEW

A delicate but touching follow-up to Jeune Femme by Léonor Serraille spans 20 years of ups and downs in the relationship of an African immigrant mother with her two sons.
In the late 1980s, Rose brings her young boys Jean and Ernest from the Ivory Coast to live in a cramped Parisian apartment belonging to relatives. Loving and playful, Rose is never portrayed as an idealised mother; the young family endures upheaval as a result of her whims. Jumping decade by decade to the present day, the narrative focuses with emotional acuteness on Jean and Ernest as they grow, their aspirations, anxieties and disappointments as they settle into their adopted country and spiral away from their mother.
