ARMONICO CONSORT & PLAYERS
DIRECTOR CHRISTOPHER MONKS
Handel: Coronation Anthems & Music for the Royal Fireworks
The Requiem is Mozart’s last major composition. Left unfinished at the end of his life it was famously completed by his pupil Süssmayr. It is amongst the greatest and most enigmatice choral works of all time and has proved an inspiration to successive generations of composers.
Such are the differences in their musical styles, it’s hard to believe Handel died just 32 years before Mozart. Written to celebrate the Peace of Aix-de-Chappelle, the Music for the Royal Fireworks is Handel at his most celebratory, as is the famous anthem Zadok the Priest, composed for the coronation of George II in 1727 (and played at every coronation since).
