open quote marks When Tom Conti's character, Jason Carmichael, is asked the point of a play, he informs us that it is 'to provide the audience with an evening of entertainment' and that's exactly what this play, Romantic Comedy, delivers. Set in an uptown New York apartment, the story follows the development of a relationship between an established playwright, played by Tom Conti, and a teacher turned playwright, played by Kate Atkinson, over fourteen years and two marriages. Written by Bernard Slade and directed by Tom Conti, the Neil Simon-esq style script is easy to follow and splattered with some touching moments and many witty one-liners. It lacked pace at the start but soon gained momentum, which was sustained throughout the two and a half hour show. The direction overall was comfortable, although I don't think it is ever possible for the director to have a true perspective of a show, as an audience member, when they are starring in it. The wonderful set received a well deserved round of applause when the curtain went up. It provided a truly realistic setting for the events that were to take place. In essence the play is a two-hander but the story is helped along with four other characters. Eleanor David was the slightly eccentric agent Blanche, Elizabeth Payne as Alison the supportive wife, Michael Fitzpatrick as Leo the understanding husband and Melanie Bond as Kate the actress diva. Conti's performance was true to form and he showed he was completely at home on stage. The accolade of the night, however, must go to Kate Atkinson who played Phoebe Craddock, the awestruck, neurotic ex-teacher with appalling dress sense. She carried the show with her amazing energy that never faltered. She possessed great physical comedy and combined this perfectly with a sincerity of performance that was simply captivating. The traditional Malvern audience appeared to thoroughly enjoy Romantic Comedy, which runs until Saturday. open quote marks

open quote marks This production was a rare treat. The set and costuming were excellent. From the initial entry of Tom Conti the story unfolded with wit & charm. His consumate skill as an actor heldyour attention and his masterly timing ensured the success of the humour throughout. Kate atkinson as his innocent writing partner gave a faultless performance. There was tangible chemistry between these two unlikely partners. These two main characters were ably supported by the unorthodox agent Blanche & Allison the sophisticated wife. All theatregoers should consider this play to be a must. open quote marks
