Malvern Theatres Young Company was created in 2012 to encourage young people’s enjoyment and participation in the arts and to offer a unique opportunity to be involved in a professionally-led production.  The first year’s show, Little Shop of Horrors, played to an audience of 1,053 and since then the company has gone from strength to strength, with 2015’s production of Oliver playing to an audience of 3,271 people. In 2016 we introduced our first drama production with Nic Lloyd directing Thornton Wilder’s play, Our Town.

In 2017, Nic directed Malvern’s Young Company stirring performance of The Crucible. For the first time ever, we were able to present this production free of charge in order to introduce the work of the company to as wide an audience as possible. 2,500 people saw the play for free and were so inspired by the young actors’ work that they donated nearly £10,000.

For 2018, we will present Sophocles’ ANTIGONE,  directed by Nic Lloyd and staged in the Festival Theatre. Having opened the production in Malvern, the company will then have the amazing opportunity to play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where Antigone will transfer for performances immediately after the Malvern run.

Since 2012, over 120 young people have taken part in the company, with a core ensemble of 26 who have appeared in over 3 of the last 6 productions.

“Last summer I was in ‘Our Town’ with Malvern Young Company – it was the best few weeks of my life. I learnt so many new skills and it built my confidence on stage so much. I really recommend it to anyone who has a passion for acting and performing.” Grace Shuttlewood, MTYC Participant 2016
