In 1910, the then unknown Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel set sail from Liverpool to New York as part of Fred Karno’s famous music hall troupe. On the voyage, they shared a cabin, they shared comedy routines and they shared laughter …
Inspired by real life events, Told by an Idiot’s acclaimed production of Charlie and Stan is the remarkable story of the greatest double act that nearly was and is a hilarious and deeply moving homage to two men who changed the world of comedy forever.
Told by an Idiot have garnered critical acclaim and devoted audiences worldwide for their wonderfully theatrical shows.
This glorious production will star Danielle Bird as Charlie Chaplin, Jerone Marsh-Reid as Stan Laurel, Nick Haverson as Fred Karno and Sara Alexander playing all the other parts, including Chaplin’s mother, and the piano! They will be joined by Reggie, making his stage debut as Scraps the Dog. Reggie will not play matinees – something to do with Elaine Paige – and, at those performances, the part of Scraps will be played by a puppet.
Running time: approx. 80 minutes, no interval.

Trelawney of the Wells
What a shame that this delightful show is getting such small houses. The conceit that the whole thing is a silent movie with no dialogue and live music throughout is a clever one and the multi-talented cast shines. Yes, some of the physical comedy could be slicker, and the evening needs more pathos (there is just the one very moving moment) to balance the slapstick, but overall the company well deserved its standing ovation from Wednesday night's small, but clearly discerning, audience!

Exceptionally entertaining show full of humour, pathos, and surprise, with sublime acting from the whole cast, a wonderful mixture of silent comedy and music. Totally enjoyable.

Oh, how I love musical theatre, especially when it is this good. Beautiful characterization (yes, with a z, so there), acted brilliantly and fabulous musicality with the piano, bells and whistles. So much fun that I am going along again tonight to enjoy it for a second time.

We thought this production was amazing. Clever, fast-moving and not a word of dialogue. Pianist was excellent.
So sad that there was such a poor house (Wed matinee), but everyone there appeared to love it.
Brilliant story telling of the beginnings of two famous performers. Get tickets and go.
