Lingui, The Sacred Bonds (15) Borderlines Film Festival

4th March 2022 - 5th March 2022

A vital new drama from Chadian auteur Haroun probes the bonds of loyalty between a mother and daughter.

On the outskirts of Chadian capital N’Djamena, single mother and practicing Muslim Amina finds out that her 15-year-old daughter Maria is pregnant. Maria wants an abortion, but in a country where it is legally and morally condemned, Amina is in a difficult position. To honour the Lingui – the sacred bonds that bind humanity, an idea integral to African culture – should she urge her daughter to have her baby in line with her faith or support her daughter’s right to choose?

Drawing on the secret female support systems that exist to counter the official communities led by men, Haroun’s humane and beautifully realised film is powered by Abakar’s towering performance as Amina.
