While resident pianist in a bar, Charlie Kohler helps his crook brother Chico Saroyan, to escape from being chased by two gangsters who he has double-crossed. The two criminals then keep a close watch on Charlie and the waitress Lena, who is in love with him. The shy Charlie tells Lena about when he was famous under the name of Edouard Saroyan, rejecting a  successful musical career after the suicide of his wife,  Thérèse, also once a waitress. When Charlie’s younger brother Fido is captured by the gangsters in retaliation, Charlie has to take a stance which ultimately has tragic consequences.
