Old Boys (15)

15th March 2019 - 17th March 2019

BORDERLINES FILM FESTIVAL

Director: Toby MacDonald

Starring: Alex Lawther, Nathen Solly, Giles Malcolm, Nicholas Agnew

UK/Sweden, 2018

The ever-engaging Cyrano de Bergerac story is refreshed and relocated to an English (boys only) boarding school, period unspecified.

Alex Lawther (Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World) plays weedy, working-class scholarship boy Amberson, hopelessly at sea in the gloriously caricatured push and pull of brutish male ritual. Bonding with French teacher’s daughter Agnes, he is disappointed to discover that she only has eyes for beef: dimwitted, ultra-posh Winchester. Affably, (but ever-yearning) Amberson steps in to supply the patter.

Delightfully funny, this first feature by award-winning short film director Macdonald would be a coming-of-age film – but nobody exactly grows up.
