Set against the vibrant landscape of South Florida, Waves from indie wunderkind Trey Edward Shults traces the epic emotional journey of a suburban African-American family.
Tyler is an 18-year-old who is approaching the end of high school. Son of a well-intentional but domineering father, the pressure to excel in both academic and sporting fields is intense, and because his shoulder hurts, he begins to pop prescription pills, with unforeseen consequences. Unbearably tense, this is a film of two halves, the first focusing on Tyler, the second on his immediate family as they learn to cope in in the darkest of times.
