BORDERLINES FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW

Director: Icíar Bollaín

Starring: Carlos Acosta, Santiago Alfonso, Keyvin Martínez

Spain/Cuba/ UK/Germany, 2018

Part biographical drama, part dance piece, wife and husband partnership Icíar Bollaín and writer Paul Laverty (The Olive Tree) bring to life the exceptional career of Cuban ballet superstar Carlos Acosta. From a deprived childhood on the outskirts of Havana, through Michael Jackson inspired dance-offs with other kids, Acosta is hauled by his father Pedro to the National Ballet School. International fame and fortune culminate in 17 years as principal dancer with London’s Royal Ballet.

Telling the story conventionally is balanced by ravishing interludes of dance work from Acosta and his young company.
