The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah

13th September 2019 7:45 pm

He befriended Nelson Mandela, fought in the 1980s race riots and recorded radical and relevant reggae music with Bob Marley’s former band. Benjamin Zephaniah was unable to read and write at school but became one of Britain’s most remarkable poets. And now he’s back with his first tour in eight years, to coincide with his autobiography, The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah.

In a compelling and inspiring show, Zephaniah will explain how he fought injustice and discrimination to lead a remarkable life, while sharing a selection of favourite stories and poems. Signed copies of The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah will be available after the show.

Event Reviews

  • Gerry

We were absorbed for the whole of Benjamin Zephania's performance at the Theatre on 13th September. For more than an hour, he talked and recited his poems to a captivated audience. Recited is hardly the word: he performed his poems with rhythm and vigour, which can only be done live. His poems would impact less if committed to print.

Every student of any age and every lecturer and public speaker should learn from him to project the message in plain, simple English, without waffle and long-windedness.

We all left Benjamin's company feeling the better for it. In this terrible time of name-calling, tribalism and intolerance it is uplifting to hear his calls for tolerance and togetherness.

We need him back soon (particularly as he has always like the Malvern Hills and rates the St Ann's Well Café as the best Vegan Café)
